CELEBRATE THE SEASONS! Summer Is Fun! Mobile

CELEBRATE THE SEASONS! Summer Is Fun! Mobile
SUMMER MOBILE

SUMMER MOBILE

Ages: 5 – 12 years

Time: ½ hour – 1 hour

MATERIALS:

White felt square 36”x 36”

Orange craft foam

Yellow craft foam

White craft foam

Beige craft foam

Turquoise craft foam

Black craft foam

Moss

Black marker

White glue

scissors

String or jute or wire or thread

Dowel rods (plus cutters for cutting or sawing the dowel rods)

  1. Using the patterns provided, trace and cut the sun from the yellow craft foam, the pail from the orange craft foam, the shell from the beige craft foam, the shovel from the turquoise craft foam, and all four colors of craft foam for the ball. Finally, cut the sunglasses from the black craft foam. You don’t have to use all the patterns from the banners project.
  2. Take a small amount of moss and glue it on the top of the pail. Press down firmly while it dries.
  3. Use a black marker to draw the sun’s cheeks, smile and nose. If you are using the shell pattern, sketch a few lines on it to make it look three dimensional. Also, spell out “Summer Is Fun!”
  4. Cut two dowel rods. Tie a piece of string, jute or wire around the middle of the two dowel rods to secure them. Then, lace a piece of string, thread, jute, or wire 6” to 8” in length through the hole at the top of each shape. Tie the shapes to the dowel rods.
  5. To balance the mobile, place two or more shapes to each dowel rod and be sure that some of the shapes hang lower (or higher) than some of the others. Cut a string long enough to tie on either end of the dowel rods for hanging.
  6. Does your sculpture move? What makes it move? How is this design different from the banner design? Can you list the differences? Can you list the similarities? What is the difference between attaching the leaves on the mobile and attaching the leaves on the banner? What makes the leaves on the mobile three-dimensional and the leaves on the banner two-dimensional?

MORE KID’S CRAFTS: Magical Wands

MORE KID’S CRAFTS: Magical Wands

MATERIALS:

Model Magic – white

Dowel rod, 12 – 14 inches in length

White glue

Markers – color(s) of choice

Beads/sequins/glitter/feathers

Curling ribbon – color(s) of choice

Scissors

Brush

PROJECT:

  1. Make a big fist-sized ball of Model Magic. Using a rolling pin or the palm of your hand, flatten out the Model Magic into a rectangle about ¼” thick.
  2. Make sure a corner of the flattened piece comes to a point. Place this piece vertically on the work surface. Squeeze the sides to form points. Refer to the photos above.
  3. Squeeze the bottom of the piece to form two points, too. You should now have five-pointed star: one point at the top, and two on either side and at the bottom.
  4. Color the dowel rod with markers. Insert it between the two points at the bottom.
  5. Push beads, feathers and sequins into the star. Apply glue to the surface of the Model Magic and cover it with glitter. Shake off the excess.
  6. Cut 3 or 4 pieces of curling ribbon 12” long. Tie the ribbon just under the star. Curl the ribbon with one of the scissor blades.

OPTIONAL: Make other shapes!

You now have a magical wand!

Our Imaginations! Have a Too Cool Day!

Our Imaginations! Have a Too Cool Day!
Too Cool Sunglasses

Too Cool Sunglasses

Read Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses by Kimberly and James Dean.

“Pete the Cat did not feel happy. Pete had never, ever, ever, ever been grumpy before. Pete had the blue cat blues.”

Grumpy Toad usually was grumpy but on the day he met Pete the Cat, he was wearing cool, blue, magic sunglasses which made him look at everything in a new way.

When Pete the Cat tried them on, he saw the world in a whole new way, too.

Walking along with his new attitude, Pete the Cat ran into his friends, Squirrel, Turtle and Alligator and lent them his cool, blue, magic sunglasses. They saw the world in a whole new way just like Pete the Cat and Grumpy Toad!

Isn’t that cool?

Then Pete the Cat fell and cracked his cool, blue, magic sunglasses.

What would he do without them?

The Wise Old Owl told him the truth: Pete the Cat didn’t need his cool, blue, magic sunglasses to see the world in a new way. “Just remember to look for the good in every day,” the Wise Old Owl told him.

Pete the Cat looks all around him and exclaimed, “Too cool!”

Project:

Decorate a pair of sunglasses to brighten your day like Pete the Cat and his friends.

Materials:

Sunglasses*

Strong glue like gorilla glue

Sequins

Paint in squeeze tubes or bottles

Glitter

Make your sunglasses the coolest ever – you don’t have to paint your glasses blue like Pete the Cat’s! You can paint them any color or design.

*Remember: if you paint the lenses, you won’t be able to see through them!
